Big and Little accomplishments

In my 7th-grade history class, our teacher took one class session out at the end of the year, and gave us all a single sheet of paper. On it, we were instructed to write out five objectives that we hoped to achieve before graduating from high school. We sealed the sheets inside envelopes, and the teacher assured us that we would receive them back when we were handed our caps and gowns before graduation.

I don’t remember exactly what I wrote down, but I do know that one of the goals was to patent an invention before I walked across the stage in Honeoye Falls. Of course, I didn’t know at the time that applying for a patent can take the better part of a decade and thousands of dollars – but it remained a good dream anyway! Almost needless to say, my first opportunity to file a patent application didn’t come until five years after that graduation cermony, when we filed a provisional patent application for Wi-Pics.

Today, I took another step toward finally checking off that long-held wish: The GM intellectual property team decided to apply for two patents on inventions that I’ve contributed to. I guess it’s easy to do when you have a legal budget that probably exceeds the GDP of some small countries, but it still feels special to me anyway. I’m sure, if those patents issue and turn into little bronze patent plaques on my wall, that it’ll feel even more special.

Over the next few months, it’s looking like my 20D is going to get quite a workout. That’ll all start Saturday, when I’ll be heading to Harp Karate to photograph my friend Jason and his cohorts during a tournament. It’ll continue through a tentative business trip to Germany, where I’m hoping jetlag won’t keep me from waking up extra-early each morning to capture a little bit of Mainz’s personality on foot with a rented Canon 24-70 f/2.8L.

It doesn’t end there, though – after dropping flaps here in the States, it’ll be time to shoot lots-o-photos over Easter weekend, and then go on-assignment for a 50th anniversary party that another friend is throwing for his parents. Four weeks after that, Dad and I are hoping to visit the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course to photograph the American LeMans race there. And Fast-forward a mere four weeks further, and it’ll be time for Kelly and my honeymoon!

As I did when I bought the camera that’ll capture all of these photos, I decided to make another investment tonight: a new LowePro CompuTrekker photographer’s backpack. It’s an investment in convenience, security for my gear, and comfort for my back! As a bonus, the laptop slot will be nice on the upcoming Germany trip, since my office laptop will certainly be tagging along!

In honor of all this photographic happiness, I figured I’d start a new mini-tradition here on daverea.com, and create an album in the gallery dedicated to photos pulled from deep within “The Archives”. The first installment of this new little tradition is an album from the 2004 American LeMans race at Mid-Ohio:

Today in Sebring, Florida, the annual 12 Hours of Sebring race kicked off the 2006 American LeMans season.

Most of my indulgences are quiet ones – sleeping an hour or two extra on Saturdays, enjoying a good bourbon or a good riesling on a weekend evning, or savoring the victory and pride as a project or piece of code works for the first time. But there are a few that are not so quiet: and sportscar racing is one of them.

If my alarm clock could sound like anything in the world, I’d pick the unmistakable 7-liter rumble of racing Corvette rounding turn 14 of the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course. And in case that’s too soothing, the shrill wind-up of the five or six Porsches chasing it would probably be enough to get me out of bed after even the latest of nights! Of course, after having experienced the real thing as your alarm clock (100 yards from our camper on the last two trips), I doubt a dresser-top rendition would do the trick.

Hopefully, this may, Dad and I will once again have the opportunity to visit Mid-Ohio as track photographers. Heck, maybe this time I’ll actually get around to posting some of the photos here! But for now, I’m off to his house to catch up on the 12-hours, since he’s undoubtedly got it running on the surround sound…

New album posted…

Dad and I visited the Rochester “International” Auto Show this morning, something I hope will become an annual tradition for us. We took a few photos around the show, and got to see the new 2006 and 2007 offerings from all our favorite manufacturers. As a bonus, the GM Sequel (the latest Hydrogen fuel cell concept car) was there, and despite working at GM Fuel Cell for almost 8 months, this was the first time I’d seen it!

Other notables included seeing the 2006 Z-06 Corvette in person for the first time, and getting to see the new Saturn Sky roadster, one of which might – hopefully? maybe? – live in our garage someday!

Interrupting the evening news tonight, an Arby’s commercial proudly advertised that “our chicken is now made of 100 percent natural chicken!”

Not to overstate the obvious here, but… What was it before?
