During a home-office cleanup tonight, I decided it was time for Kelly’s old laptop – with a broken screen hinge and an aging Pentium II processor – had to stop collecting dust in the corner and make the trip to the big computer network in the sky…
The one thing that needed to be done before deep-sixing the machine was to remove the hard drive, which (only after removing the keyboard) I discovered was as easy as removing one screw from the bottom of the machine, swinging a plastic cover out the way, and pulling out the machine’s cute little stainless-steel hard drive caddy.
I had to laugh, though, as soon as I pulled the caddy out. On top was a caution label, and the first caution statement on the label read, “Do not install or remove the hard disck pack while the computer’s power is on.”
Now I realize not everyone inherently knows that doing so would be a Very Bad Thing™, but considering that you actually have to remove said hard disk pack before you can see the label, I think the purpose is – somehow – not quite served.
